Mobile, Ala. (BuzzReport) — A 33-year-old inmate at the Mobile County Metro Jail has died while incarcerated, sparking renewed concerns about inmate medical treatment and accountability inside local jails and detention facilities.

According to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, Dextarious Earies died early Friday morning while being housed inside the jail’s medical clinic. Authorities confirmed that an autopsy has been performed, but the official cause of death has not yet been released.

Earies’ mother says her son had been complaining about serious stomach issues before his death and believes the tragedy could have been prevented if his medical concerns had been properly addressed.

The case is now adding to growing scrutiny surrounding inmate deaths in law enforcement custody and correctional facilities across the country. Advocates and families of incarcerated individuals continue to raise alarms about delayed medical attention, ignored health complaints, and inadequate healthcare inside jails and prisons.

Concerns over inmate healthcare have become increasingly serious as deaths behind bars continue to rise nationwide. Civil rights organizations and prison reform advocates have repeatedly warned that incarcerated individuals often face significant barriers when seeking medical treatment, even when reporting severe pain or worsening health conditions.

The death of Earies is likely to intensify questions surrounding medical oversight and inmate safety at Metro Jail, particularly regarding how medical complaints are evaluated and how quickly inmates receive treatment when symptoms are reported.

At this time, officials have not released additional details surrounding the circumstances leading up to Earies’ death, including what medical care he received prior to being found unresponsive in the jail’s medical unit.

The investigation remains ongoing.
