MOBILE, Ala. (BuzzReport)— Questions surrounding the Mobile Police Department’s involvement in federal immigration enforcement operations took center stage during Tuesday’s Mobile City Council meeting after a resident publicly challenged city leaders over what he believes is cooperation between local police and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). During the public comment portion of the meeting, Mobile resident Dale Hall raised concerns about alleged law enforcement activity involving Latino residents and questioned whether Mobile police officers are assisting ICE agents conducting operations within the city. Hall told council members that videos circulating on social media appeared to show law enforcement actions involving Latino individuals and claimed Mobile police officers were being utilized in support roles during federal immigration enforcement activities. According to Hall, assigning city officers to assist ICE operations could reduce the number of officers available to respond to calls for service and perform routine patrol duties throughout Mobile. “When you take two or three police officers off of patrol, they can’t come to me and they can’t help me,” Hall told the council. Hall also alleged that he had viewed video footage showing an ICE agent using force against a Latino man during an incident in Mobile. He stated that the footage was being preserved and could potentially be used as evidence in future legal proceedings. Beyond questions about law enforcement operations, Hall urged city officials to promote compassion toward immigrant communities and avoid actions that could be perceived as targeting or harassing residents based on their background. Hall also referenced the federal 287(g) program, which allows certain local law enforcement agencies to cooperate with federal immigration authorities under specific agreements. He questioned the extent of any local participation and argued that city resources should not be heavily committed to federal immigration enforcement activities. Following Hall’s remarks, Mobile City Council President C.J. Small invited Executive Director of Public Safety Curtis Graves to respond to the allegations. Graves immediately pushed back against Hall’s claims, stating that city officials were unaware of the incidents being described and denying that the Mobile Police Department was engaged in the activities alleged during the public comment session. “I have absolutely no idea what he’s talking about,” Graves told council members. Graves said the Mobile Police Department continues to focus on its traditional law enforcement responsibilities and only assists other agencies when necessary. “We are a law enforcement agency that will assist other law enforcement agencies on a need basis, but in no way have we done anything as he’s just described right now,” Graves said. Graves further stated that he had discussed the matter with Mobile Police Chief William Jackson prior to the council meeting after seeing Hall’s comments listed on the agenda. “I talk to our chief every day,” Graves said. “We talked about this because I saw it on the agenda. We don’t know what he’s talking about.” Despite the response from city leadership, the exchange left some questions unresolved. While Graves strongly denied the specific allegations outlined by Hall, neither Graves nor Chief Jackson directly addressed whether Mobile police officers have assisted ICE agents in any capacity during recent operations within the city. Instead, officials emphasized that any assistance provided to outside law enforcement agencies would occur only when needed and denied involvement in the activities Hall specifically described. The discussion highlights growing public scrutiny surrounding immigration enforcement efforts across the country and the role local law enforcement agencies may play when federal authorities conduct operations within their jurisdictions. As of Tuesday’s meeting, city officials maintained that they were unaware of the incidents referenced by Hall and denied any involvement matching the allegations presented during public comments. No additional information regarding potential cooperation between MPD and ICE was provided during the meeting.
