MOBILE, Ala. (BuzzReport) — A late-night road rage confrontation on one of Mobile’s busiest thoroughfares escalated into violence Saturday night, leaving one man injured and another behind bars after police say a handgun was used during the altercation.

According to the Mobile Police Department, officers responded to the 6000 block of Airport Boulevard at approximately 10:12 p.m. on June 6 after receiving reports of an assault.

When officers arrived, they located an adult male suffering from a minor, non-life-threatening injury. Emergency responders assessed the victim at the scene as investigators began gathering information about what led to the confrontation.

Police said the suspect remained at the location and was taken into custody without incident. Detectives were called to the scene to conduct a more extensive investigation due to the circumstances surrounding the assault.

As investigators pieced together the events leading up to the incident, they determined the assault stemmed from a road rage encounter that escalated beyond a verbal dispute.

According to police, the suspect allegedly struck the victim in the head with a handgun during the confrontation. Investigators further allege that the suspect pointed the firearm at other individuals who were present during the incident, creating a potentially dangerous situation for multiple people at the scene.

Authorities identified the suspect as Derek Sullivan, 33. Following his arrest, Sullivan was transported to Metro Jail, where he was booked pending formal charges and further court proceedings.

Officials have not released details regarding what initially sparked the road rage incident, how many vehicles were involved, or whether the parties knew one another prior to the encounter.

The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue reviewing evidence and witness statements. Additional details, including potential charges and court dates, are expected to be released as the case moves through the criminal justice system.

Authorities are encouraging motorists to remain calm during traffic disputes and to contact law enforcement rather than engage in confrontations that could escalate into violence.
