MOBILE, AL (BuzzReport) – The race for Mobile City Council District 7 is intensifying following Councilwoman Gina Gregory’s decision to decline participation in an upcoming candidate forum. The Robert Battles campaign, a prominent challenger, has swiftly characterized the refusal as a “troubling pattern of avoidance” and a disregard for transparency expected of public officials. The forum, organized by local media outlets UpLift Mobile and The Buzz Report, was scheduled for July 24th to provide a critical platform for engagement with voters in the Mobile Terrace and Hillsdale communities. Councilwoman Gregory cited a pre-existing “planned event” as her reason for declining the invitation. However, the Battles campaign immediately criticized the decision, asserting that it “speaks volumes about Councilwoman Gregory’s lack of commitment to transparency and accountability.” Robert Battles emphasized the importance of such platforms for democratic discourse. “The community deserves a platform where open and respectful dialogue can take place regarding the critical issues impacting our district,” Battles stated. “It is disheartening that an opportunity for such dialogue has been overlooked and rejected.” Further fueling the campaign’s critique, the Battles team highlighted what they describe as a dissonance between Councilwoman Gregory’s recent public appearances and her legislative history. “While she attends community events to distribute t-shirts and capture pictures,” the campaign noted, “her voting record tells a different story.” They allege Gregory has “frequently voted against the interests of the black community in Mobile,” suggesting her recent engagements are merely an election-season shift in actions. Battles underscored this point, stating, “You have to make room in your schedule for the voters you seek to represent.” The campaign also pointed to Councilwoman Gregory’s opposition to the initial redistricting plan for District 7, framing it as an instance of “lack of leadership and willingness to make difficult choices for the betterment of our district.” “We need a representative who listens, who prioritizes transparency, and who is not afraid to confront and communicate with the citizens they serve,” Battles reiterated. “The people of District 7 deserve better than a representative who seeks to dodge tough questions and skirt accountability. It’s time for change in our community.” The Battles Campaign affirmed its dedication to fostering an environment of openness and outreach, urging residents of District 7 to demand accountability from their elected officials and to seek a leader who truly represents their interests. Mobile municipal elections are scheduled for August 26th.
