Dothan, AL (BuzzReport) – As Dothan city elections draw near, The Buzz Report has learned that a serious accusation of attempted bribery has emerged, casting a shadow over the race for the District 3 City Commission seat. Kyle Scott, a challenger for the position, claims he was offered an inducement by the incumbent Commissioner Bradley Bedwell to withdraw from the contest. Scott asserts he was “stunned” to receive a message two weeks ago from a number he identified as matching Commissioner Bedwell’s campaign signage. The alleged communication proposed that Bedwell would “invest in Scott’s future potential” if he ceased his campaign, even suggesting assistance in finding a “different race.” Furthermore, the message allegedly included an offer to cover up to $2,000 of Scott’s campaign expenses. Scott did not mince words, labeling the alleged overture as “deplorable, dishonest, and an entire hypocrisy” given the incumbent’s stated campaign focus on transparency. “Somebody who’s campaigning on transparency and saying they want an opponent to do something enticing to get somebody to drop out of the race is just deplorable, dishonest, and its an entire hypocrisy to what their slogan is about,” Scott stated emphatically. Scott asserts that the alleged bribe followed discussions he had with Bedwell regarding significant personal hardships, including the loss of his property due to fire on Bell Street in March and prior revelations about financial difficulties and job-seeking efforts last year. He claims that shortly after these sensitive conversations, he received the message, alongside a contact number for personnel resources to help him secure a job. “You weren’t doing this out of the kindness of your heart, you got all this private information because it was from an investigation, I confirmed it,” Scott alleged. “You dangled a carrot helping me as a friend to a friend as a sincere gesture, and turned it into a bribe. I haven’t talked to the company, replied to Bedwell, and if this is the leadership we have we are all in trouble.” Despite the apparent gravity of the alleged offer, Scott has, to date, refrained from filing a formal report with law enforcement. He articulated his reluctance, stating, “I don’t want anybody to go to jail or anything, or it affects someone’s family, I just want the incumbent to do the right thing.” Scott shared the alleged message with other candidates and trusted community members, who unanimously viewed it as a bribe and advised him to report it. Scott underscored the potential long-term damage such actions could inflict on civic trust. He expressed concern that this incident could “set a bad precedent for city government,” emphasizing his conviction that a functional democracy “will only work if those who fight for it stands on truth, virtue, justice and honesty.” While not seeking punitive legal action against Bedwell, Scott hopes for accountability. “I hope the commission reviews this internally or independently; it’s on the people of the district to decide their thoughts on it. my view is it’s a sugar-coated bribe,” he stated. Despite the controversy, Kyle Scott confirmed his unwavering commitment to remain in the race for District 3. The Buzz Report attempted to reach Commissioner Bradley Bedwell for comment regarding these serious allegations but was unsuccessful. The Dothan electorate in District 3 now faces the task of weighing these serious allegations as the election approaches, with the integrity of local governance now a central point of contention.
