Mobile, AL (BuzzReport)— A potentially deadly house fire in Mobile ended without injuries Tuesday morning thanks to the quick actions of firefighters and an off-duty Mobile Police officer who happened to be in the right place at the right time.

According to the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department (MFRD), crews were dispatched shortly after 11:00 a.m. to the 1000 block of Imperial Court after 911 callers reported a residence on fire.

When firefighters arrived, they found a two-story home heavily involved in flames, with fire and thick smoke pouring from the front entrance while flames had already broken through the roof at the rear of the residence. Crews immediately launched an aggressive attack to contain the blaze and search the home for anyone still inside.

Officials said two people were inside the residence when the fire began.

One occupant was able to safely evacuate the home before firefighters arrived. However, a second resident, who is disabled and uses a wheelchair, remained trapped inside as the fire intensified.

In a remarkable twist, an off-duty Mobile Police officer, who is also a former Mobile Fire-Rescue firefighter, noticed smoke rising over a nearby hill while traveling through the area. Recognizing the danger, the officer rushed to the scene and helped the wheelchair-bound resident escape the burning home before conditions worsened.

Firefighters arrived moments later and continued suppression efforts, bringing the fire under control while ensuring no one else remained inside.

Mobile Fire and Rescue gave thanks to the officer’s quick thinking and courageous actions, both occupants survived the incident without injury.

The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department praised the coordinated efforts that helped prevent what could have been a tragic outcome.

Investigators remain on the scene working to determine what sparked the fire. At this time, the cause of the blaze remains undetermined and is under investigation.
