Montgomery, AL (BuzzReport) — Former U.S. Senator Doug Jones is sounding the alarm over what he describes as aggressive power grabs by the Alabama Legislature, using campaign stops in Huntsville and Athens to rally voters as he seeks the Democratic nomination for governor of Alabama.

Jones, sharply criticized recent Republican-backed proposals advancing through Alabama Legislature, arguing they undermine democratic principles and weaken the voice of voters.

Among the most controversial efforts, Jones condemned a proposal to transform the state’s elected Public Service Commission into an appointed body. He called the idea “a horrible idea” and “a bad look for democracy,” warning that it would concentrate power in the hands of a few state leaders. The proposal, which would have allowed appointments by the governor, lieutenant governor, and House speaker, faced significant pushback this week and was ultimately withdrawn.

Jones also addressed newly passed legislation allowing capital punishment in certain child sexual assault cases. While acknowledging the bill’s overwhelming legislative support, he expressed deep reservations about its constitutionality.

“I’ve got real concerns about the bill,” Jones said, pointing to existing Supreme Court of the United States precedent. “It’s going to be challenged. It will be challenged in the courts as potentially unconstitutional.”

Jones noted that while he has not conducted an in-depth review of the legislation, its passage was virtually guaranteed due to Montgomery’s Republican supermajority.

Alabama voters are set to cast ballots in both Democratic and Republican primaries on May 19, a contest that could shape the future direction of state government and define the political battleground heading into the general election.
