Two Arrested In George County Following Alleged Neglect Of Elderly Vulnerable Person

GEORGE COUNTY, MS (BuzzReport)— The George County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrests of two Howell community residents following a lengthy investigation into the alleged neglect of an elderly vulnerable person.

Authorities identified the suspects as Robert Leonard and Mary Bernadette Leonard, both of the Howell community. Each was arrested and charged with Abuse or Neglect of a Vulnerable Person following an investigation that began more than a year ago.

According to the George County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation began on June 30, 2025, when deputies received a report from a family member of an elderly victim who was reportedly suffering from severe neglect. The victim was ultimately hospitalized as a result of the alleged circumstances.

Investigators conducted an extensive investigation into the allegations, which eventually led to warrants being issued for both Robert and Mary Leonard.

On August 28, 2026, both suspects turned themselves in to investigators with the George County Sheriff’s Office. They were taken into custody and transported to George County Justice Court, where they appeared before Judge Marty Davis.

Judge Davis set a $2,000 commercial bond for each defendant.

Sheriff Mitchell Mixon emphasized the seriousness of allegations involving vulnerable members of the community and praised investigators for their work throughout the lengthy case.

“The elderly and vulnerable members of our community deserve to be treated with dignity, care, and respect. Allegations involving the neglect of a vulnerable person are taken extremely seriously by this Sheriff’s Office. I commend our investigators for their diligence and commitment to seeing this investigation through to its conclusion.”

The case highlights the responsibility of families, caregivers, and others entrusted with the well-being of elderly and vulnerable individuals. Authorities say allegations involving the mistreatment or neglect of vulnerable people will be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated.
