George County, MS (BuzzReport) — A late-night medical airlift in George County took an unexpected and troubling turn when two volunteer firefighters were arrested for allegedly interfering with emergency crews while under the influence of alcohol.

According to the George County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred on the evening of December 11, when AmeriPro Ambulance Service requested a life-flight helicopter to assist with a critical medical patient. While paramedics and flight personnel worked to stabilize the scene, two members of the Bexley Volunteer Fire Department reportedly attempted to disrupt operations.

Deputies responding to the call identified the individuals as Mark Wilson, 60, and Kathleen Wilson, 67, both active volunteers with the department. An on-scene investigation determined that both had been consuming alcohol prior to their arrival at the emergency. Authorities say the pair’s actions created a safety hazard for both the patient and the responding crews.

Mark Wilson was arrested and charged with Obstruction of Emergency Assistance and Driving Under the Influence (First Offense). Kathleen Wilson was charged with Obstruction of Emergency Assistance and Drunkenness in a Public Place. Both were transported to the George County Regional Correctional Facility for booking.

County emergency management officials confirmed that the firefighters will be removed from service, noting that impairment of any kind during an emergency response is strictly prohibited. The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that public safety professionals—paid or volunteer—are held to the same legal standards as any citizen and that any interference with rescue operations will result in immediate enforcement action.

Officials also commended other volunteers present at the scene who alerted law enforcement to the situation, ensuring that the medical flight proceeded without further incident.

The patient involved in the original medical emergency was successfully transferred to the helicopter and flown to a hospital for continued treatment.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing, but county authorities are treating the episode as a serious breach of trust and safety within the volunteer firefighting ranks.
