MOUNT VERNON, AL (BuzzReport) – The quiet small town of Mount Vernon, Alabama, finds itself in an escalating state of disarray following the controversial firing of its police chief and explosive allegations of mayoral interference in a serious use-of-force incident involving one of the department’s officers. Citizens, frustrated by a perceived lack of transparency and accountability, converged on a recent town council meeting, only to be met with closed doors and unanswered questions, further fueling widespread outrage.

At the heart of the uproar is a leaked body camera video from May 10 of this year, depicting Officer Newman Brazier using aggressive tactics against a handcuffed man. The disturbing footage shows Brazier pepper-spraying, tasing, and then dragging the restrained individual. This incident quickly became a flashpoint, leading to Officer Brazier’s law enforcement license being temporarily suspended by the Alabama Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission.

Mount Vernon’s town attorney, Jay Ross, has confirmed that Brazier is now on unpaid administrative leave and is slated to appear for a full hearing before the commission early next year. This clarification comes amidst citizen concerns that Brazier was still receiving pay, a detail that has added to the public’s distrust.

The departure of the town’s former police chief, whose name was not released but who has reportedly been identified as Mr. Eric Pettway, is inextricably linked to the Brazier incident. According to Pettway, his firing came after he attempted to discipline Officer Brazier for violating the department’s use-of-force policy, but was allegedly blocked by Mayor Peoples. The accusation that Mayor Peoples would not allow the chief to uphold departmental standards and discipline an officer for a serious infraction has sent shockwaves through the community and the broader law enforcement sphere. Many consider hindering a police chief from enforcing the law a grave and unacceptable abuse of power.

The recent town council meeting, intended by citizens as an avenue for dialogue and accountability, instead became a symbol of the town’s fractured leadership. Attendees were shut out and their urgent pleas for transparency and better leadership seemingly ignored. Mayor Peoples himself has been dogged by questions regarding the actions he took — or allegedly prevented — as mayor concerning the former police chief and the Brazier case.

Citizens who managed to voice their frustrations outside the closed session painted a grim picture of a town struggling on multiple fronts. One particularly vocal resident, speaking on condition of anonymity due to fear of reprisal, did not mince words: “Mayor Peoples and all council members need to resign immediately. We are planning to create a concerned citizens group to advocate for their removal from office.”

The resident continued, articulating a deeper malaise gripping Mount Vernon: “Our town is already suffering – no growth, a bad drug situation, rampant theft, and ridiculously high water bills. Our town is not united at all. It now seems as if we have thugs running our town, and there is a cover-up to something bigger.” This sentiment underscores the belief among many residents that the issues surrounding the police department are merely symptoms of a deeper rot within the town’s governance.

While Town Attorney Jay Ross provided clarity on Brazier’s current unpaid status, the public’s perception remains skewed, highlighting the significant communication breakdown between town officials and its residents. Mayor Peoples, in a brief statement, indicated that there would be “news next week” regarding both the former chief and Officer Brazier, offering little concrete information to assuage the growing unrest.

The intertwining crises of alleged police misconduct, mayoral interference, and a perceived lack of accountability have left Mount Vernon deeply divided and uncertain about its future. As the community reels from these revelations, the formation of a concerned citizens group signals a deepening resolve to demand answers and systemic change. All eyes will now be on Mayor Peoples’ promised announcement next week and the upcoming hearing for Officer Brazier, as Mount Vernon desperately seeks a path towards healing and restoring faith in its leadership.
