Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) – A Mobile resident, Demetrius Shinn, is alleging that he was unlawfully detained during a traffic stop in downtown Mobile early Saturday morning, which he claims resulted in physical injury and medical treatment. Shinn’s account raises concerns about police conduct, particularly regarding the credibility of the initial traffic violation claimed by the officer involved. The incident occurred around 1 a.m. when Shinn, driving a factory-standard C8 Corvette, was pulled over by Officer Evan Castillo. According to Shinn, Castillo cited loud tailpipes as the reason for the stop. However, Shinn contends that his vehicle complies with standard noise regulations and that the officer’s claim was unfounded. Shinn reports having complied with Castillo’s request by presenting his driver’s license, but claims the situation escalated when he was forcibly removed from the car. “He pulled me over and lied and said I had loud pipes,” Shinn stated. “I was just pulling out of a parking area—he sat in the street so I couldn’t turn right—and as soon as I made a left, he hit his lights.” Shinn says his hand was injured during the traffic stop and confrontation with the officer over his unlawful arrest. According to Shinn, when he asked for the reason for his arrest, Castillo failed to provide a clear answer, creating an atmosphere of confusion and distress. The situation reportedly deteriorated further when Shinn resisted being handcuffed, leading officers to use a Taser up to eight times on him. In an alarming escalation of events, Shinn was subsequently transported to USA Medical Center, where he say he was left waiting outside until a decision was made to charge him with five undisclosed offenses. Shinn stated, “I haven’t done anything,” and expressed disbelief at being subjected to a medical procedure—as officers reportedly obtained a warrant to draw his blood for a DUI test, despite the initial stop being for an alleged noise violation. The incident has sparked outrage and concern within the community, particularly regarding Officer Castillo’s conduct. Social media platforms are rife with criticism as residents voice their frustrations, recalling previous encounters with Castillo that have raised red flags about his policing methods. Notably, it has been reported that Officer Castillo was previously involved in a high-speed chase. Officer Castillo joined the police department in 2023. As of this article, attempts to contact the Mobile Police Department for a statement regarding the incident and Officer Castillo’s history have been met with silence. In the wake of Shinn’s claims, community members are calling for greater transparency and accountability from their law enforcement agencies, advocating for a closer examination of the tactics employed by officers during traffic stops.
