DeSoto County, Miss. (BuzzReport) — Four individuals were arrested Thursday in DeSoto County, Mississippi, in connection with a food stamp fraud scheme totaling approximately $131,000, District Attorney Matthew Barton announced. The arrests follow investigations into individuals who allegedly misrepresented their financial circumstances to improperly receive government assistance benefits.

The arrests were the result of a collaborative investigation involving the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office, the District Attorney’s Office, and the Mississippi Department of Human Services. A press release issued by these agencies detailed the indictments of the four women.

District Attorney Barton characterized the cases as “essentially a food fraud case where they failed to disclose changes and circumstances, omitted income.” He added that the individuals were “receiving in order to qualify for certain government assistance and benefits” they were not entitled to.

The four women, identified as Stephanie Wright, Tiffany Harrell, Syerra Lynks, and Lashonda Smith, face individual charges stemming from the alleged fraud. Stephanie Wright was indicted on three counts of fraud totaling $18,114. Tiffany Harrell faces a five-count indictment for fraud amounting to $30,443. Syerra Lynks received a three-count indictment totaling $30,853, while Lashonda Smith had the largest individual indictment, a five-count charge totaling $52,053.

The alleged fraudulent activity spanned several years, with District Attorney Barton indicating that the schemes began in 2020 and concluded a few months prior to the arrests.

Barton underscored the importance of community vigilance in combating such crimes, encouraging tips on fraud cases to aid in future investigations.
