Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) – Former Mobile Police Chief and current mayoral candidate Paul Prine has confirmed he voted for President Donald Trump in the last election, a revelation that sparked concern and pointed questions during a recent meeting with the Mobile County Democratic Executive Committee on Thursday. Prine addressed a packed room at Bethel AME Church, seeking to garner support from the committee as he pursues the city’s top office. However, attendees expressed anxieties about the potential impact of national policies on local governance, particularly those implemented during the Trump administration. The fear, as articulated by many, is that cuts to crucial programs like Pre-K, SNAP, energy assistance, housing assistance, Meals on Wheels, and healthcare assistance could trickle down and negatively affect Mobile residents. The potential erosion of these vital services loomed large in the minds of attendees. City council candidate Robert Battles directly confronted Prine about his stance on Trump’s Executive Order regarding “stop and frisk” policies, questioning whether he supported a measure that could disproportionately target and harm young Black men. Prine reportedly avoided giving a definitive answer, further fueling the apprehension amongst the audience. Given Mobile’s demographics, with a majority Black population and a significant number of low-income and working-class residents reliant on government assistance, the issue of safeguarding these programs is paramount. Voters are keen to elect a mayor and city council members who will champion their needs and protect the funding and services they depend on. “I’m scared for my kids, their school lunch and Head Start funding,” expressed LaKeshia Hall, a concerned resident who was not present at the meeting but learned of the Trump admission through social media. “I may wake up one morning and it’s gone. I want someone who will fight for us, not just some of us.” Prine’s acknowledgement of his past vote for President Trump has undoubtedly added a layer of complexity to the upcoming municipal election. Paul Prine also shared his ideas for tackling local issues and laying out his plans for tackling crime, improving workforce development and examining the city’s infrastructure. Mobile residents will head to the polls on Tuesday, August 26th, to elect their next Mayor and City Council, armed with the knowledge of Prine’s political leanings and the ongoing concerns about the future of vital community resources. The choices they make will undoubtedly shape the trajectory of Mobile for years to come.
