PRICHARD, Ala. (BuzzReport) — Prichard Mayor Carletta Davis is speaking publicly about what she describes as a continuing breakdown in the working relationship between her administration and the Prichard City Council, saying ongoing conflict has made it increasingly difficult to address the city’s most pressing needs. In a public statement, Davis said she has spent the past several months attempting to work with council members in a “respectful and productive manner” but believes City Council meetings have become dominated by conflict and political disagreements rather than meaningful action for residents. “Over the past several months, I have remained committed to working with the City Council in a respectful and productive manner to address the needs of the people of Prichard,” Davis said. “Unfortunately, our Council meetings have often become consumed by unnecessary conflict and distractions that prevent us from accomplishing the business our residents elected us to do.” The mayor emphasized that her primary responsibility is to the citizens of Prichard and not what she characterized as “bickering or political theater.” According to Davis, she made the decision in early June to stop attending City Council meetings until they can be conducted in a professional, respectful, and productive environment focused on city business. She stressed, however, that her absence from council meetings should not be interpreted as stepping away from her duties as mayor. “My Administration will continue working every day to improve public safety, strengthen city services, pursue economic development, and address the concerns of our residents,” Davis said. “My office remains open, accessible, and ready to serve the people of Prichard.” Davis said she does not believe participating in meetings that fail to produce meaningful results is the best use of the city’s time or resources, adding that residents deserve leaders who are focused on solving problems rather than creating division. Despite the ongoing tensions, the mayor said she remains committed to rebuilding the relationship with the City Council and establishing a more collaborative form of government. “It is my heart’s desire to have a unified government,” Davis said. The mayor revealed that she has made several attempts to improve communication with council members, both collectively and individually. She said she has sought assistance from local clergy to mediate discussions and has also asked the courts to help facilitate mediation in hopes of restoring professionalism and cooperation. Davis said she remains willing to meet with every member of the City Council to discuss a path forward. “When we are prepared to conduct the people’s business with professionalism, respect, and a shared commitment to the future of Prichard, I will gladly return to the table,” she said. The mayor concluded by reaffirming that her priorities remain unchanged and that her administration will continue working on issues affecting residents, including public safety, economic development, and improving city services. “I was elected to serve the people of Prichard, and that is exactly what I intend to keep doing every single day,” Davis said. The ongoing disagreement between the mayor and the City Council has drawn increasing attention in recent months as questions continue to surround the city’s ability to address key issues facing the community. It remains unclear when Davis will resume attending council meetings, though she says she remains open to returning once a more productive working environment can be established. If the Prichard City Council responds to the mayor’s statement, BuzzReport will provide updates as they become available.
