RUSTON, La. (BuzzReport) — A new chapter officially begins for Louisiana Tech athletics on July 1 as the Bulldogs and Lady Techsters become full members of the Sun Belt Conference, ending a 13-year run in Conference USA and ushering in a move many fans, coaches, and university leaders believe will strengthen the school’s athletic future.

The transition is one of the most significant developments in Louisiana Tech athletics in more than a decade. The university had announced its intention to join the Sun Belt in 2025, but after months of negotiations and legal disputes regarding an early exit from Conference USA, the move has now become official.

The Bulldogs enter a conference widely regarded as one of the strongest and most competitive leagues among the Group of Five, featuring established football and basketball programs while restoring several long-standing regional rivalries.

Regional Rivalries Return

Perhaps the biggest benefit of the move is the return of annual matchups against familiar opponents.

Louisiana Tech will now compete regularly against regional foes including Louisiana, ULM, Southern Miss, South Alabama, Troy, and Arkansas State, creating shorter road trips for athletes and fans while reigniting rivalries that had largely disappeared during the Conference USA years.

For many supporters, those regional games represent the heart of college athletics.

Instead of lengthy trips across the country, fans can once again travel to conference games within driving distance, creating larger visiting crowds and more electric game-day atmospheres.

Economic Boost for Ruston

The move is also expected to provide a significant economic impact for the city of Ruston.

Local leaders anticipate increased hotel bookings, restaurant traffic, retail spending, and tourism as Sun Belt schools bring thousands of traveling fans throughout the athletic calendar.

Ruston Mayor Ronny Walker said the city expects the conference change to benefit local businesses while giving Louisiana Tech supporters easier access to away games throughout the region.

Athletic Director Ryan Ivey has also indicated that enthusiasm surrounding the move has already translated into increased season ticket sales, signaling growing excitement among the Bulldog fan base.

Stronger Competition Across Sports

The Sun Belt has earned national recognition in recent years for its success across multiple sports.

In football, the conference has consistently produced nationally ranked Group of Five programs, competitive bowl teams, and memorable upsets over Power Four opponents.

In men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, and Olympic sports, the Sun Belt has also expanded its national profile through NCAA Tournament appearances and postseason success.

Louisiana Tech now joins a conference that emphasizes geographic alignment while maintaining a high level of athletic competition.

A Fresh Start for Louisiana Tech

After more than a decade in Conference USA, the Bulldogs believe the move offers renewed opportunities for recruiting, television exposure, fan engagement, and long-term institutional growth.

The Sun Belt’s regional footprint reduces travel demands for student-athletes while placing Louisiana Tech alongside universities with similar athletic traditions and passionate fan bases.

For players, coaches, alumni, and supporters, July 1 represents far more than a conference change—it marks the beginning of what many hope will be a new era of sustained athletic success.

With familiar rivals back on the schedule, increased fan excitement, and renewed momentum across its athletic programs, Louisiana Tech enters the 2026–27 academic year looking to make an immediate impact in its new conference.
