BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BuzzReport) — The Birmingham Chapter of Black Lives Matter is speaking out forcefully following the arrest of community activist Eric Hall, arguing that the incident highlights what it describes as a troubling lack of transparency and accountability from city leadership regarding multiple deaths connected to the Birmingham City Jail. In a public statement released Tuesday, the organization said Hall’s arrest should not distract from what it believes are urgent questions surrounding recent in-custody deaths and the city’s response to mounting public concerns. “The issue before the public is not Eric Hall,” the statement reads. “The issue is the growing number of unanswered questions surrounding recent deaths connected to the Birmingham City Jail and the broader pattern of government resistance to public scrutiny.” According to Black Lives Matter Birmingham, Hall joined fellow community activists, including Dr. W. Taft Harris Jr. and Dikerius Blevins, in seeking a meeting with Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin regarding several matters of public concern. Among those concerns was the death of Patrick Lamar Croskey, known throughout the community as “Peaches,” a Black transgender resident whose death while in custody at the Birmingham City Jail has sparked widespread calls for transparency and accountability. The organization noted that only days later, another detainee, Kendall Kadeem Sweazer, was found dead inside the same facility, further intensifying public concern about conditions and oversight within the jail. DEMANDS FOR TRANSPARENCY Black Lives Matter Birmingham argues that these incidents are not isolated events but rather matters of significant public interest that warrant immediate answers from city officials. “The citizens of Birmingham possess both a constitutional right and a civic obligation to demand answers when individuals die while under government custody and control,” the statement said. The organization outlined several questions it says remain unanswered, including: What policies were in place to protect vulnerable detainees? Whether those policies were properly followed. Whether concerns related to mental health and inmate safety were adequately addressed. What independent review processes have been initiated. What corrective measures, if any, will be implemented immediately to prevent future deaths. According to the group, these requests are not political demands but represent “the minimum requirements of accountable government.” CONCERNS EXTEND BEYOND CITY JAIL The statement also referenced the death of Xavier Gray and expressed concerns about what activists describe as a broader pattern involving law enforcement agencies and government officials controlling the flow of information while families struggle to obtain answers. “Transparency cannot be selectively applied. Accountability cannot be discretionary. Public trust cannot survive where public scrutiny is treated as a threat,” the organization stated. ARREST SPARKS FURTHER QUESTIONS Rather than resolving tensions, Black Lives Matter Birmingham argues that Hall’s arrest has only deepened community concerns. “No democratic society should reach a point where citizens seeking answers from elected officials are met more quickly by law enforcement than by public leadership,” the statement said. The organization framed the issue within the broader historical struggle for civil rights and equal justice, emphasizing that Black communities have long fought for equal protection under the law and accountability from public institutions. Activists insist that their demands are not for special treatment but for constitutional governance, transparency, and accountability from elected officials. CALL FOR PUBLIC RELEASE OF INFORMATION Black Lives Matter Birmingham is calling for the immediate release of all information legally available to the public regarding the deaths of detainees and the policies governing inmate safety within the Birmingham City Jail. The organization concluded its statement by reiterating that the public, affected families, and the broader Birmingham community deserve answers. “The people of Birmingham are entitled to answers. The families are entitled to answers. The community is entitled to answers,” the statement reads. “And no arrest will diminish the public’s right to demand them.” As public scrutiny intensifies, city officials continue to face growing pressure from activists and community members seeking greater transparency regarding the circumstances surrounding recent deaths in custody and the safeguards in place to protect individuals held at the Birmingham City Jail. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin has not released a formal statement concerning the arrest of Eric Hall or the recent death at the Birmingham City Jail.
