THOMASVILLE, Ala. (BuzzReport) — A Thomasville police officer was killed in a devastating early morning crash Wednesday along U.S. 43 in Clarke County, authorities confirmed.

According to initial information, the fatal collision occurred around 4:45 a.m. when the officer’s patrol vehicle struck the rear of an 18-wheel tractor-trailer. Both vehicles were traveling northbound at the time of the crash.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene, where the officer was pronounced dead. The identity of the officer has not yet been publicly released pending notification of next of kin.

The crash has caused major disruptions in the area. Officials with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) say all lanes of U.S. 43 near the 90-mile marker are currently blocked and will remain closed for an undetermined period as the investigation continues.

The Clarke County Emergency Management Agency reports the highway is shut down through Thomasville from Industrial Road to Nicol Drive, urging drivers to seek alternate routes.

Troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division are actively investigating the cause of the crash. No additional details have been released at this time.
