Baldwin County, AL (BuzzReport) — A Baldwin County judge set a $500,000 bond on Friday for a Mobile Police Department homicide detective accused of multiple sex crimes involving a child. Jacob Clifford appeared in court for the first time since his arrest Wednesday, facing seven felony charges, including four counts of sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12 and three counts of first-degree sodomy. Court records indicate Clifford knew the alleged victim. During the hearing, District Court Judge Ashley Siebert considered arguments from both prosecutors and the defense regarding bond conditions and the seriousness of the charges. Prosecutors argued that the investigation was conducted thoroughly and responsibly, emphasizing that the alleged crimes were reported without delay and that the child was interviewed by trained professionals at the Baldwin County Child Advocacy Center. According to the prosecution, law enforcement worked to corroborate the child’s statements through interviews and additional investigative steps. Based on the information gathered from the child and other witnesses, prosecutors stated they believe there is sufficient probable cause to justify Clifford’s arrest and the filing of charges. The defense maintained that Clifford is innocent and asserted that the allegations arose from separate, unrelated court proceedings. Defense counsel argued that circumstances surrounding the case should be carefully examined and indicated the intention to fully contest the charges at trial. The defense also objected to the bond amount, calling it excessive given that Clifford has no prior arrest history and has consistently cooperated with authorities. Prosecutors countered that the bond request aligns with standard practices in cases involving young children, particularly when Class A felony charges such as first-degree sodomy are involved. The judge ultimately agreed with the prosecution’s recommendation and approved the full $500,000 bond. As conditions of release, Clifford will be required to wear a GPS ankle monitor and will be prohibited from having any contact with minors, including the alleged victim. He has 30 days to request a preliminary hearing as the case moves forward through the court system.
