Washington D.C. – U.S. Representative Terri Sewell (AL-07) has successfully secured $3,265,000 in federal appropriations funding dedicated to four crucial local projects within Alabama’s Black Belt region. This significant investment responds directly to urgent infrastructure, public safety, and healthcare needs identified by local authorities and constituents.

The congresswoman champions the annual appropriations process as a direct mechanism for ensuring tangible improvements in the lives of district residents. The newly allocated $3.2 million is specifically designed to expand healthcare access, enhance support for first responders, increase public safety, and upgrade foundational infrastructure across the region. Sewell’s office indicated that advocacy efforts will continue for additional funding as Congress works toward finalizing the remaining spending bills for the current fiscal year.

The secured funding is distributed across four distinct projects, focusing overwhelmingly on facility modernization and community resource development.

Perry County Investments Totaling $1,515,000

Perry County will receive targeted funding for dual projects aimed at improving community resiliency and healthcare infrastructure.

  1. Marion National Guard Armory Renovation:A total of $500,000 has been earmarked for the comprehensive renovation of the abandoned Marion National Guard Armory. The project will transform the space into a vital, multi-purpose community hub. This modernized facility will serve simultaneously as a center for workforce development training, a temporary shelter for families during emergencies, and a central location for the deployment and distribution of essential supplies during critical incidents.
  2. Rural Health Center Modernization: The Rural Health Medical Program, Inc. (RHMPI) is allocated $1,015,000 for the renovation of the Uniontown Health Center. This major upgrade is designed to address critical gaps in medical infrastructure. The funding will transform the existing building into a modern, fully equipped medical center through the enhancement of clinical equipment, laboratories, X-ray capabilities, and IT systems. Additionally, the project includes necessary improvements to the surrounding roads and parking facilities for better patient access.

Pickens County Public Safety Upgrade

Pickens County will receive $1,000,000 to improve emergency services and public safety infrastructure in the western portion of the state.

This sum will fund the construction of a new, centralized joint station in Aliceville, designed to house both municipal police and volunteer fire departments. The creation of this combined facility is expected to enhance public safety by allowing first responders to better serve residents throughout Pickens County and West Alabama with improved efficiency and response times.

Sumter County Community Development

The Sumter County Commission secured $750,000 for the construction of a new community center.

The facility is envisioned as a central gathering place where residents of all ages can connect and engage in activities promoting community empowerment and long-term resilience. The center’s programming will include educational programs, workshops, and skill-building sessions aimed at enhancing the capabilities and knowledge of community members, particularly youth and adults.
