Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) – A stark reminder of the city’s vulnerability echoed through Mobile this past Saturday, November 1, 2025, as two vehicles were snatched right out from under their owners’ noses. The Mobile Police Department is urgently reiterating a critical message to residents this season: stay alert and never leave your vehicle running unattended.

The cool morning air, a welcome change for many, proved to be an irresistible invitation for opportunistic thieves. In separate incidents occurring on Saturday, both vehicles were left running to warm up, a common practice during colder weather. The first to fall victim was a car parked in the 2000 block of Brill Road. Hours later, a second vehicle met the same fate in the 1300 block of St. Stephens Road.

Tragically, these two brazen thefts are attributed to the same individual, identified by authorities as 19-year-old Lavon Davis. Davis was subsequently apprehended, but the financial and emotional toll on the victims remains.

The police department emphasizes that the cooler temperatures are not an excuse for lax security. They urge drivers to consider the immediate risks associated with leaving a vehicle unattended and running:

  • Increased Risk of Theft: As demonstrated this weekend, thieves actively target running vehicles, seeing them as easy opportunities.
  • Potential for Grand Theft Auto: Beyond simple theft, these incidents can escalate into more serious crimes.
  • Unforeseen Consequences: Even if the vehicle is recovered, the damage, loss of personal belongings, and the hassle of dealing with the aftermath can be significant.

Beyond the warning about running vehicles, the Mobile Police Department also reinforced the age-old advice: never leave your vehicle unlocked, and always remove valuables. Purses, phones, shopping bags, and any other items left in plain sight can be a powerful lure for even the most opportunistic thief.
