George County Woman Arrested on Felony Child Abuse Charge Following Child Neglect Investigation

LUCEDALE, MS. (BuzzReport) — A George County woman has been arrested on a felony child abuse charge after an investigation by the George County Sheriff’s Office uncovered what authorities described as deplorable living conditions and evidence that a child had been subjected to abuse.

According to the George County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation began after deputies received a report from Child Protection Services regarding a possible case of child neglect. Investigators responded immediately, launching a welfare investigation to determine the child’s safety and living conditions.

As investigators gathered evidence, authorities determined the child was allegedly living in an environment they described as unsafe and unsanitary. Officials also concluded the child had been subjected to abuse, prompting criminal charges.

Following the investigation, Amanda J. Gunter, 27, was arrested and charged with Felonious Child Abuse.

Court records indicate Gunter was granted a $35,000 commercial bond. As of the latest information released by authorities, she remains in custody.

The child has since been removed from the residence and placed in a safe environment while the investigation continues.

The George County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that additional charges could be filed as investigators continue reviewing evidence and conducting interviews.

“The safety and well-being of children in our community is one of our highest priorities,” Sheriff Mixon said. “We urge the public to report any unsafe living conditions or suspected physical abuse involving a child. It takes all of us working together to protect those who cannot protect themselves.”

Law enforcement officials stressed that reports from the public, educators, healthcare professionals, neighbors, and family members can play a critical role in identifying children who may be at risk and ensuring they receive the protection and services they need.
