DAPHNE, AL (BuzzReport) — Alabama’s 1st Congressional District, set to be an open contest in 2026, has drawn a formidable new entrant from outside the professional political class. Community leader and decorated U.S. Army combat veteran Clyde Jones of Daphne announced his candidacy this week, challenging the status quo and immediately targeting what he calls the “lazy blame” culture dominating Washington.

Jones, a Democrat, enters the crowded field armed with a unique blend of military discipline, corporate experience, and deep community roots that he argues are desperately needed to mend national divisions.

A veteran of both Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom II, Mr. Jones is a recipient of the U.S. Army’s Bronze Star, awarded for distinguished service in combat. Jones’s announcement shifts the focus of the AL-01 race from purely partisan maneuvering to a debate over tangible solutions and the character of future leadership.

The Attack on Status Quo

Jones wasted no time in articulating his critique of Washington and the candidates currently vying for the seat. His immediate concern centered on the looming threat of rising healthcare costs.

“Like many Americans, I am troubled by the direction of our country and the continued divisive rhetoric coming out of Washington, D.C.,” Jones stated during his announcement.

He focused specifically on the fate of the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced premium tax credits, which, if allowed to expire, could trigger massive economic hardship for Gulf Coast families.

“We are facing the very real threat of serious economic consequences, including skyrocketing healthcare costs, if the enhanced premium tax credits currently in place within the Affordable Care Act are not renewed,” Jones said.

Jones then aimed directly at the current political leadership of the district, criticizing the lack of constructive engagement on key issues.

“Where is our Congressional leadership in Alabama’s First District? Why have we not heard the announced candidates for this seat share any sort of unique vision for how we could get to a deal instead of playing the same old games that lazily blame the opposition for all the problems and offering nothing in the way of new solutions?” Jones continued. “The people of this district deserve so much more than they have been receiving. We must do better.”

From Deployment to DuPont to Daphne

Jones’s resume suggests he is positioning himself as a disciplined problem-solver accustomed to operating in high-stakes environments, far removed from standard political fare.

After earning his degree from Excelsior University, Jones spent nearly two decades working for DuPont, a multinational chemical manufacturing company, specializing in business operations, safety, and training. This corporate background, the campaign suggests, provides him with the operational knowledge necessary to manage complex policy challenges.

Beyond his uniform and the boardroom, Jones has established a significant presence in Alabama’s nonprofit and faith communities. He is a nonprofit executive leader and community activist, serving as the former president of the Board of Directors for Alabama Arise, an organization focused on poverty and social justice issues statewide. He also previously led SEEDS, an educational enrichment nonprofit dedicated to providing financial support for the Daphne Public Schools.

A man of faith, Jones serves as the associate minister for Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Daphne, a role he cherishes for “the opportunity to open hearts and minds as well as provide much needed community leadership and support.”

Open Race, Challenging Odds

The 1st Congressional District seat is open because current Representative Barry Moore is seeking the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Senator Tommy Tuberville. While AL-01 is a historically deep-red territory, Jones’s entry provides Democratic voters with a highly credentialed option focused on economic stability and an end to partisan deadlock.

The Democratic Party primary is scheduled for May 19, where Jones will seek the nomination to offer voters in Mobile, Baldwin, and Washington counties an alternative vision focused on pragmatic solutions over political drama.
