MOBILE, AL (BuzzReport)– Former University of Alabama national champion quarterback AJ McCarron officially shifted playbooks Thursday, announcing his candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of Alabama in the 2026 Republican primary. The Mobile native, known for leading the Crimson Tide to back-to-back national titles, immediately positioned himself as an anti-establishment conservative outsider ready to challenge long-standing political norms in Montgomery. McCarron’s announcement focused heavily on cultural defense and his perceived need for political newcomers to govern the state. “Alabama’s conservative and cultural values are under attack from every direction,” McCarron said in his formal address. “That’s why Charlie Kirk’s assassination affected so many of us so deeply. His example convinced me to get off of the sidelines, get into the game, and stand tall for our conservative beliefs, so today, I’m announcing my candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of Alabama.” Outsider Agenda and High-Profile Inspiration McCarron is running on a platform emphasizing “outsider” status and deep commitment to conservative principles. He joins a growing trend of former sports figures seeking high public office in the state. A press release from the campaign credits former President Donald Trump with inspiring McCarron’s political aspirations. McCarron publicly endorsed Trump in 2016 and “credits the 45th and 47th president with inspiring him to run for elected office,” the release said. He also signaled a willingness to partner with another potential candidate from the state’s deep sports tradition—current U.S. Senator and former Auburn Football Coach Tommy Tuberville. “The Montgomery insiders and career politicians have had their chance. It’s time for political newcomers and outsider candidates like me to lead the battle,” McCarron asserted. “When Coach Tuberville is governor, I’ll be the quarterback who helps pass his conservative outsider agenda.” Quarterback to Candidate McCarron, 33, holds an esteemed place in Alabama football history. As a starting quarterback, he helped the Crimson Tide secure National Championships in the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Following his collegiate career, he was drafted in 2014 and played nine seasons across several teams in the NFL. Since retiring from professional football, McCarron has worked as a college football analyst and co-owns McCarron Real Estate in Mobile with his wife, Katherine Webb McCarron, who was crowned Miss Alabama USA in 2012. The couple resides in Mobile with their three sons. The Republican Field McCarron enters a competitive Republican primary field, with the Lieutenant Governor race expected to attract significant attention and funding. Among the established figures he will face are Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries Rick Pate, Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen, and Dr. Nicole Wadsworth. The Alabama Primary is scheduled for May 19, 2026. The winner of the Republican primary will then proceed to the general election.
