MOBILE, AL (BuzzReport) – In a significant move set to reshape public transportation in Mobile, Mayor Sandy Stimpson’s administration has announced its selection of VIA Metropolitan Transportation – the parent company behind the successful MoGo ride-share service – to take over the management and operation of Wave Transit, the city’s public bus service. The choice, which marks a departure from current operator TransDev, now awaits approval from the Mobile City Council next week.

The decision comes as Mayor Stimpson nears the end of his term, laying the groundwork for the city’s transit strategy for years to come. VIA Metropolitan Transportation, while perhaps less known for large-scale bus operations, currently manages the popular MoGo service for the Mobile Chamber, which primarily facilitates worker commutes to jobs in the eastern part of the city using smaller passenger vans.

Under the proposed contract, VIA will receive approximately $8 million in city funds, supplemented by an additional $4.1 million from the federal government. This financial structure represents a slight reduction in the city’s direct contribution and an increase in federal aid compared to the current contract – a welcome shift for City Council members who have expressed concern over the steadily rising city share in recent years.

One of the immediate assurances from the administration is the continuity of service. Scott Collins, executive director of finance, informed City Council members that VIA is contractually obligated to maintain all current Wave Transit routes until at least June of next year. Furthermore, city officials confirmed that all existing Wave Transit employees will be offered positions with the new service, aiming for a smooth transition for the workforce.

However, the selection has already begun to raise questions. Concerns are emerging within the community and among observers regarding VIA’s primary experience with smaller shuttle vans, prompting inquiries into the qualifications of the other companies that bid for the Wave Transit contract. The administration has yet to publicly disclose the full list of bidders.

Looking ahead, city officials have indicated that VIA will eventually merge the existing fixed-route Wave Transit system with the more flexible MoGo model. While the idea of expanding the MoGo model and potentially streamlining or cutting lesser-used fixed routes has been discussed, officials emphasize that any such significant changes to the service network will ultimately be decisions for the incoming mayoral administration to make.

The Mobile City Council is expected to deliberate on the proposed contract next week, with the future direction of public transit and the integration of traditional bus services with modern ride-share solutions at the forefront of their discussions.
