HOMEWOOD, Ala. – The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) has announced the completion of its investigation into the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Jabari Peoples by a Homewood police officer. The agency has forwarded its findings, including body camera footage of the incident, to the Homewood Police Department and the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.

Peoples, an Aliceville resident, was shot on June 22. While the original police account stated that an individual involved in an altercation with the officer “produced a firearm,” attorneys representing Peoples’ family contend that he was unarmed and without a weapon at the time of the shooting.

ALEA confirmed on Friday, in a news release, that its State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) file, which encompasses all collected materials and the critical body camera video, has been transferred. The agency noted that this information has not yet been released to the public.

ALEA emphasized its commitment to the integrity of its investigations, stating, “The Agency remains committed to protecting the integrity of all its investigations and ensuring that all facts are gathered and evaluated thoroughly.”

According to the original news release detailing the June 22 incident, a Homewood police officer was on patrol when he observed a parked vehicle and initiated an investigation. The release further stated that one of the individuals in the vehicle engaged in a physical altercation with the officer and “produced a firearm.” The officer then discharged his weapon, striking Peoples. The officer received treatment for injuries sustained during the encounter, while Peoples was transported to a local hospital where he subsequently died.

The family and public is awaiting the official word from the Homewood Police Department and County District Attorney.
