MOBILE, AL (BuzzReport) – With the municipal election less than 60 days away, the race to become Mobile’s next Mayor is intensifying. Former Police Chief Paul Prine currently holds the lead, according to the latest BuzzReport News poll, which surveyed voter preference in the upcoming election.

The poll, conducted over the past week across BuzzReport’s social media platforms, asked participants: “If the election were held today, who would you vote for in the Mobile mayor’s race?”

Out of over 1,800 votes cast, Prine secured a commanding 56% of the vote. Following behind is State Representative Barbara Drummond with 18%, former District Judge Spiro Cheriogotis with 15%, and County Commissioner Connie Hudson trailing with 10%. A mere 1% of participants indicated support for a candidate outside of the listed contenders.

“I support the best candidate for the job and experience. That is what Mobile needs moving forward,” stated Jamie Orso, a Mobile resident of five years, reflecting a sentiment focused on qualifications and leadership.

The race has seen shifts in its composition. State Representative Barbara Drummond now stands as the sole Black candidate remaining, following the withdrawal and subsequent endorsement of Drummond by former Police Chief Lawrence Battiste and former City Councilman Jermaine Burrell. Former City Council and Commissioner Steve Nodine also exited the race prior to the qualification deadline.

While Prine leads in the BuzzReport poll, financial reports paint a different picture. Over $2 million has been raised in the mayoral race to date, with former District Judge Spiro Cheriogotis leading in both total funds raised and cash on hand. Conversely, Prine’s campaign has reported raising the least amount of money, possessing the smallest cash reserve among the candidates.

The election is set for Tuesday, August 26th, when Mobile residents will ultimately decide who will lead the city into the future. The coming weeks are expected to be crucial as candidates work to solidify their support and sway undecided voters.
