Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) – The qualifying period for Mobile’s upcoming municipal elections has officially closed, revealing a significant shift in the mayoral race and a dynamic set of contests for city council seats. Notably absent from the final ballot for mayor are two prominent figures who had actively campaigned for months: former Police Chief Lawrence Battiste and former City Councilman Jermaine Burrell.

Their failure to qualify leaves State Representative Barbara Drummond as the sole African American candidate vying for the city’s top executive position. She will face a field including Spiro Cheriogotis, Connie Hudson, and Paul Prine, setting the stage for a focused mayoral campaign in a majority black city.

The city council races present a more contested picture, with five of the seven districts seeing competitive matchups. District 1 is poised for a rematch, as Incumbent Cory Penn will again face former District Judge Herman Thomas. In District 2, Incumbent William Carroll is set to compete against both Community Activist Reggie Hill and former Mobile County Schools Deputy Superintendent Samantha Ingram.

District 3, currently represented by Councilman CJ Small, will see no contest, with Small, who also serves as the current council president, running unopposed. District 4 will feature Incumbent Ben Reynolds against businessman Bill Applying in a direct challenge.

The race for District 5’s council seat will be uncontested, with Beau Fleming set to succeed outgoing councilman Joel Daves, as he was the only candidate to file for the position.

Incumbent Josh Woods, in his first term after winning a special election, will face a strong challenge in District 6. He has attracted two challengers: former Police Detective Paul “Donk” Onderdonk and businessman Matt Frazier, both aiming to unseat him.

Perhaps the most closely watched council race is in District 7. Following a redrawing of district lines to accommodate population shifts, this district now holds a majority Black electorate. Incumbent Gina Gregory will face off against formidable opponent in Community Activist and former School Board Commissioner Robert Battles, Sr. in the August election.

Mobile residents will cast their ballots in these pivotal municipal elections on Tuesday, August 26th. The outcomes of these races will shape the future direction of city leadership and policy for near future.
