Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) – Mobile residents are gearing up for another round of protests against President Trump’s immigration policies, part of a nationwide “No Kings” National Day of Defiance. The protest, scheduled for this Saturday in front of Government Plaza, follows several previous demonstrations in the city that were well-attended and peaceful.

However, controversy arose after Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch’s comments on a local radio talk show. In response to a question about potential violence during protests, Burch stated that if individuals attempted to breach barricades or interfere with law enforcement, they would face consequences. He added, “That barricade can become a weapon.”

The sheriff’s comments sparked debate, with some expressing concern that his words could be perceived as inciting violence. Maura Mandyck, with “Indivisible Mobile,” the group organizing the protest, emphasized that the demonstrations are intended to be peaceful and that property destruction and vandalism are not condoned.

When asked about the reaction to his comments, Sheriff Burch clarified that he was responding to hypothetical questions and that he firmly believes in the public’s right to protest. “The very first duty of mine as a sheriff is I’m a constitutional officer and defend the constitutional rights of citizens,” he said.

The Mobile Police Department has announced that they will be prepared to ensure a safe environment during the protest. Chief William Jackson stated, “While this is meant to be a peaceful protest, as with any large event, our officers will be ready to respond.”
