Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) – Former County Commissioner Stephen Nodine announced on Tuesday the suspension of his mayoral campaign in Mobile, Alabama, citing difficulties in obtaining the necessary clearance from the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles. Nodine, a once-promising figure in the Republican Party, has faced significant legal challenges in the past that continue to impact his political aspirations. Nodine, who previously held a seat on the Mobile City Council, was viewed as a potential rising star in local Republican politics until a serious murder allegation in 2010 led to a dramatic fall from grace. He was accused by Baldwin County prosecutors of murdering his girlfriend, Angel Downs—a charge that ultimately resulted in a hung jury. While he avoided a conviction for murder, Nodine did plead guilty to two lesser charges: one for ethics violations concerning the personal use of a county-issued pickup truck, and a second for perjury linked to providing false information on a form for a court-appointed lawyer post-trial. This year, Nodine aimed to make a comeback by entering the race for mayor, a position currently held by retiring Mayor Sandy Stimpson. However, in order to qualify for the candidacy, Nodine needed a pardon for his previous offenses from the Board of Pardons and Paroles. Revelations during the campaign process indicated that the state’s electronic court records system incorrectly classified Nodine’s ethics charge as a felony, complicating his path to securing the necessary pardon. The inaccuracy in his legal classification posed a significant hurdle, ultimately leading to his decision to suspend his campaign efforts. Moreover, the legal challenges for Nodine extended beyond state charges. He was also pursuing a presidential pardon for a federal gun charge stemming from the murder investigation. Nodine has admitted to the possession of firearms while under the influence of drugs, specifically citing his use of marijuana during that period. The suspension of Nodine’s mayoral campaign underscores ongoing issues surrounding legal consequences for former officials, particularly those attempting to navigate the political landscape after serious allegations. With the search for a new mayor of Mobile now wide open, other candidates may seize the opportunity to fill the void left by Nodine’s withdrawal from the race.
