Capital Murder Charge Filed After Mobile Mother and Unborn Child Killed in Zeigler Boulevard Shooting

MOBILE, AL (BuzzReport) — A heartbreaking tragedy that has shaken the Mobile community has taken a significant legal turn after prosecutors upgraded charges against the woman accused of killing a 23-year-old expectant mother and her unborn child.

The Mobile County District Attorney’s Office announced that 29-year-old Kanedrea Davis is now charged with capital murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Chyna Hickman, a young mother who was pregnant at the time of her death. Prosecutors allege that the shooting claimed the lives of both Hickman and her unborn child.

The deadly incident occurred Friday night at Hickman’s home on Zeigler Boulevard, where police say Davis shot Hickman during a confrontation.

“This is tragic and should never have happened,” said Mobile County District Attorney Keith Blackwood, describing the devastating loss.

A Young Mother Remembered

Friends and family say Hickman was a hardworking entrepreneur who had been focused on growing her beauty business. Earlier on the day she was killed, she promoted a $20 eyelash special on social media, encouraging clients to message her to schedule appointments.

According to her brother, Hickman had experienced an unusually busy day and believed she was running behind schedule with clients before the fatal shooting occurred.

Her death has left two young children without their mother, adding another layer of heartbreak for a family now mourning an unimaginable loss.

Community members have described Hickman as a caring mother with dreams for the future, making the tragedy even more painful for those who knew her.

Prosecutors Condemn the Violence

District Attorney Blackwood expressed disbelief that a dispute could escalate into such a deadly encounter.

“It’s absolutely ridiculous. Frankly, it’s horrible that a dispute of any kind could lead to a murder, much less a murder of two people. And so, my heart goes out to the victim’s family,” Blackwood said.

Because prosecutors allege two lives were taken, Davis now faces a capital murder charge under Alabama law.

If convicted, she could receive one of two sentences:

• Life in prison without the possibility of parole, or
• The death penalty.

Blackwood said the District Attorney’s Office has not yet determined which punishment it will pursue.

“We have a process here within the office to determine what penalty we will seek, and we will be doing that as the investigation unfolds,” Blackwood said.

Previous Criminal History

Court and jail records indicate Davis has previously been charged with several offenses, including:

• Harassment
• Reckless endangerment
• Criminal mischief
• Disorderly conduct

Earlier this year, Davis was charged with four counts of harassment after authorities alleged she threw glass plates at children ages 9, 8, 7, and 5 during a March incident.

Those pending charges were a factor during a court hearing Monday morning, where a judge denied Davis bond.

With the upgraded capital murder charge, the case will now move to Mobile County Circuit Court, where it will be assigned to a circuit judge. An arraignment date is expected to be scheduled in the coming weeks.
