South Carolina Governor Appoints Late Sen. Lindsey Graham’s Sister to U.S. Senate Seat

COLUMBIA, S.C. (BuzzReport)— South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has appointed Darline Graham Nordone, the younger sister of the late U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, to temporarily fill her brother’s vacant seat in the United States Senate following his sudden death over the weekend.  

The appointment comes just days after Sen. Lindsey Graham, 71, died unexpectedly from an aortic dissection, ending more than two decades of service in the U.S. Senate and sending shockwaves through South Carolina and Washington, D.C.  

In announcing the decision, McMaster described the appointment as a way to provide continuity while honoring Graham’s legacy of public service. Nordone will serve as an interim U.S. senator until January, when the winner of this year’s special election is sworn into office.  

A Historic Appointment

Nordone’s appointment is historic, making her the first woman to represent South Carolina in the United States Senate. Although she has largely remained out of the political spotlight, she has long been considered one of her brother’s closest advisers and confidants.  

The Graham siblings shared an extraordinary bond. After the deaths of both parents while they were young, Lindsey Graham became his sister’s legal guardian, helping raise her while serving in the U.S. Air Force. That family connection has been widely cited as one of the reasons behind her appointment.  

Accepting the appointment, Nordone pledged to continue her brother’s work during the remainder of his term and said she hoped to honor the trust South Carolinians had placed in him.  

Trump Backed the Appointment

The decision also follows public support from President Donald Trump, who urged McMaster to appoint Nordone as a tribute to the late senator.

Trump wrote that Graham’s sister would be “a fabulous tribute” to the longtime senator, noting the close relationship the siblings shared throughout Graham’s political career.  

Temporary Role as Political Battle Begins

While Nordone will complete the remainder of Graham’s current Senate term, she is not guaranteed the seat beyond January. South Carolina law requires a special election to determine who will serve the next full six-year term. A Republican primary is scheduled for August 11, followed by the November general election.  

Several prominent South Carolina Republicans are expected to compete for the nomination, making the race one of the state’s most closely watched political contests in years. Democrat Annie Andrews has already secured her party’s nomination and will face the eventual Republican nominee in the general election.  

A State Continues to Mourn

The appointment comes as South Carolina continues to mourn the loss of one of its most influential political figures. Lindsey Graham served in the U.S. Senate since 2003, becoming one of the nation’s most recognizable Republican lawmakers through his work on national security, the judiciary, foreign affairs, and military policy.
