MCKINNEY, Texas (BuzzReport) — The fate of 19-year-old Karmelo Anthony is now in the hands of an majority white with no blacks Texas jury as one of the state’s most closely watched murder trials nears its conclusion. Closing arguments are scheduled Tuesday before jurors begin deliberating in the high-profile case involving the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in Frisco. Prosecutors and defense attorneys are expected to make their final appeals before the jury retires to decide whether Anthony will be convicted of murder, acquitted on grounds of self-defense, or found guilty of a lesser offense. Anthony is accused of fatally stabbing Metcalf during an altercation that erupted under a team tent during a rain delay at a track meet in April 2025. Prosecutors argue the stabbing was an unjustified act of violence that escalated from a dispute over seating arrangements. The defense has maintained that Anthony feared for his safety and acted in self-defense after a physical confrontation developed. The trial has drawn national attention not only because of the deadly confrontation but also because of controversy surrounding jury selection. Anthony, who is Black, is being judged by a jury panel that contains no Black jurors. Defense attorneys challenged the prosecution’s removal of the remaining Black prospective jurors during jury selection, arguing the strikes were racially motivated. The court ultimately allowed the jury to stand after prosecutors provided race-neutral explanations for the dismissals. Over four days of testimony, jurors heard from students, coaches, law enforcement officers, and other witnesses who were present when the confrontation occurred. Witness accounts painted sharply different pictures of the moments leading up to the fatal stabbing, with prosecutors portraying Anthony as the aggressor and the defense emphasizing his claim that he was threatened and reacted in fear. One of the most closely watched moments of the trial came when Anthony chose not to testify in his own defense. After the defense rested its case Monday, the court announced that no additional evidence would be presented, setting the stage for closing arguments and jury deliberations. If convicted of murder, Anthony could face a sentence ranging up to life in prison under Texas law. Jurors are expected to begin deliberations immediately after closing arguments and judicial instructions are completed. Court officials have indicated the jury will remain sequestered while deliberations continue. With emotions running high inside and outside the courtroom, the verdict is expected to have far-reaching implications in a case that has sparked intense debate across the country. Now, after months of investigation, legal arguments, and public scrutiny, twelve jurors will determine whether Karmelo Anthony will walk free or spend decades behind bars.
