$400,000 Drug Smuggling Operation Foiled Near Mississippi Prison; Jackson Woman Held on $1.1 Million Bond

RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (BuzzReport) — A routine roadside safety checkpoint turned into a major drug bust early Sunday morning after Rankin County deputies allegedly uncovered an estimated $400,000 worth of narcotics and contraband destined for a Mississippi prison.

According to the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were conducting a safety checkpoint on Highway 468 near the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility shortly after 1:00 a.m. when they stopped a dark-colored passenger vehicle traveling toward the prison.

The driver was identified as Rachel Marie Thomas of Jackson.

During the traffic stop, deputies reportedly developed probable cause to search the vehicle. Investigators say what they discovered revealed a large-scale smuggling operation allegedly aimed at introducing illegal substances and contraband into the state correctional system.

Authorities reported seizing multiple pounds of marijuana, quantities of THC wax, methamphetamine, suspected liquid fentanyl, oxycodone dosage units, two large bottles of promethazine, numerous cell phones, drug paraphernalia, and alcohol concealed inside water bottles.

Investigators believe Thomas was en route to the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility with the intention of delivering the prohibited items into the prison, a move that could have placed inmates, correctional staff, and the facility itself at significant risk.

Law enforcement officials estimated the combined street value of the seized narcotics and contraband at approximately $400,000, making it one of the more substantial interdictions in the area this year.

Thomas was taken into custody at the scene and charged with trafficking a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following her arrest, she was transported to the Rankin County Adult Detention Center, where she remains incarcerated under a $1.1 million bond.

The seizure highlights the ongoing challenge correctional facilities face in preventing drugs, illegal communications devices, and other contraband from entering prison walls. Authorities say investigations into potential connections and whether additional individuals were involved remain active.

The case remains under investigation, and additional charges could be possible as investigators continue examining the source and intended recipients of the narcotics and contraband.
