FOLEY, Ala. (BuzzReport) — A Baldwin County man accused of gunning down his neighbor during a violent confrontation appeared before a judge Monday for the first time since his arrest, as investigators and defense attorneys presented sharply different accounts of the deadly encounter. Thirty-seven-year-old Patrick Beasley appeared in court by video conference following his arrest Friday night at a mobile home park off Doc McDuffie Road in Foley. He is charged with murder in the shooting death of his neighbor, Forrest Self. According to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to reports of a shooting and arrived to find Self suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators said the suspect remained at the scene and initially appeared to be a bystander as first responders worked to assess the situation. As homicide investigators began piecing together the events leading up to the shooting, they determined the deadly violence stemmed from an escalating dispute between two men who were known to each other. Authorities allege that during the confrontation, Beasley produced a firearm and shot Self three times. Investigators said the rounds struck Self in the chest and upper abdominal area, causing fatal injuries. Despite emergency efforts at the scene, Self did not survive. The shooting has left residents of the normally quiet mobile home community shaken as details continue to emerge about the moments before gunfire erupted. While prosecutors contend the shooting was an unlawful act that resulted in the death of an unarmed man, Beasley’s defense team painted a much different picture during Monday’s hearing. Defense attorney John Beck argued that his client acted in self-defense after what he described as serious threats allegedly made by Self toward Beasley, his wife, and one of his daughters. Court proceedings revealed conflicting narratives surrounding the incident. Prosecutors stated that Self’s girlfriend was in the process of moving out and that Beasley had gone to assist her when the confrontation occurred. However, the defense claims Beasley and his wife responded after hearing the woman screaming and believed she was in danger. According to Beck, witness statements support the claim that Beasley intervened to protect the woman, himself, and his family from a potentially violent situation. The case now appears likely to center on whether investigators can prove the shooting was criminal or whether a jury could ultimately determine that Beasley acted lawfully under Alabama’s self-defense statutes. During the hearing, a judge set Beasley’s bond at $150,000. If released, he will be subject to strict conditions, including house arrest, GPS monitoring, and a prohibition against possessing or being around firearms. Meanwhile, detectives continue to gather evidence, review witness statements, and reconstruct the timeline of events that led to the deadly shooting. Neighbors say they remain stunned that a dispute between acquaintances ended in bloodshed, transforming a residential community into the scene of a homicide investigation. The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office has indicated the investigation remains active, and additional evidence could play a critical role as the case moves through the court system. The Buzz Report will continue to follow this developing case and provide updates as new information becomes available.
