Washington, D.C. (BuzzReport)—The NAACP has launched a bold new national campaign urging Black athletes, recruits, fans, and donors to boycott powerhouse college athletic programs in several Southern states accused of weakening Black voting power through recent redistricting efforts. The campaign, called “Out of Bounds,” targets major public universities in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas following a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling tied to the Voting Rights Act. Civil rights leaders argue the decision opened the door for Republican-led legislatures to redraw congressional maps in ways they believe dilute Black political representation. According to the NAACP, Black athletes generate billions of dollars for universities through football and basketball programs, especially in conferences like the SEC and ACC, while Black communities in many of these same states continue battling what activists describe as voter suppression and racial gerrymandering. “This is a sprint to erase Black political power,” NAACP President Derrick Johnson said as the organization announced the campaign. The group is now calling on top high school recruits to reconsider signing with schools in the targeted states and encouraging current athletes to use their platforms, NIL influence, and transfer options to pressure universities into publicly addressing voting rights concerns. The campaign also urges fans and alumni to stop purchasing tickets, merchandise, and licensed apparel connected to targeted athletic programs and instead redirect financial support toward historically Black colleges and universities, commonly known as HBCUs. The movement has already ignited intense debate across social media and political circles. Democrats Rally Behind the Campaign Many Democratic leaders and members of the Congressional Black Caucus have publicly supported the NAACP’s actions, arguing that economic pressure has historically been one of the most effective tools in the fight for civil rights. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries backed the boycott effort and accused several Republican-led states of pushing what he described as “Jim Crow-like” redistricting tactics. Jeffries and CBC members say major athletic institutions cannot remain silent while Black political representation is being weakened. Supporters of the boycott point to historic movements like the Montgomery Bus Boycott and athlete-led activism during the Civil Rights Movement as examples of how financial and cultural influence can force political change. Some activists believe college sports — especially football in the South — represent one of the strongest economic pressure points available. Republicans Push Back Republican leaders and conservative voices, however, are strongly criticizing the campaign. Many Republicans argue the redistricting changes are about complying with the Supreme Court’s ruling and ensuring maps meet constitutional standards, not suppressing Black voters. GOP officials have defended the redraws as legally necessary following the court’s recent decision on race-based districting. Critics of the boycott also question whether it is fair to place the burden of a major political battle on young Black athletes, many of whom rely on scholarships and elite athletic programs to change their lives and support their families. Online debate has intensified, with some social media users arguing that athletes should not be forced to sacrifice opportunities for political activism, while others say choosing different schools is a powerful and necessary statement against policies they believe threaten Black representation. Some worry that black athletes will ignore the call, and put sports, and NIL money over their rights and communities. For now, the NAACP says the “Out of Bounds” campaign will continue until targeted states adopt what the organization describes as fair voting maps and stronger protections for Black voters.
