Lucedale, MS (BuzzReport) — A George County man is behind bars after authorities say a shooting investigation led deputies to quickly identify and arrest a suspect charged with aggravated assault. According to the George County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded on May 5, 2026, at approximately 8:51 p.m. to the 100 block of High Hopes Lane following reports of a male subject who had been shot. When deputies arrived on scene, they immediately secured the area and launched an investigation into the incident. Investigators with the George County Criminal Investigations Division later identified 29-year-old Mason D. McCarty of Lucedale as the suspect in the shooting. Authorities said a warrant was issued for McCarty’s arrest, and on May 6, 2026, law enforcement officers located and took him into custody without incident. McCarty has been formally charged with Aggravated Assault and is currently being held at the George County Regional Correctional Facility while awaiting his initial appearance before a George County Justice Court judge. George County Sheriff Mitchell Mixon condemned the violence and praised the actions of deputies and investigators involved in the case. “This type of violence has no place in our community,” Sheriff Mixon said. “I am proud of the swift response of the Patrol Deputies and thorough investigative work by our Investigators in quickly identifying and apprehending the suspect. We remain committed to ensuring the safety of our citizens and holding those responsible for violent acts accountable.” Officials say the investigation remains active, and no additional information is being released at this time.
