MOBILE, Ala. (Buzz Report) — A long-anticipated transformation of air travel in South Alabama is nearing completion, but behind the scenes of the new terminal at Mobile International Airport, concerns over delays, design changes, and leadership decisions are raising serious questions about the project’s timeline and transparency. The new state-of-the-art terminal—relocating commercial air service from west Mobile to the Downtown Brookley Aeroplex—has been touted as a game-changer for the Gulf Coast. However, despite visible progress and earlier projections, the opening date has shifted multiple times, leaving residents and stakeholders asking: what’s really causing the delays? THE COST AND THE MOVE: WHAT WE KNOW The new terminal, located at the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley, represents one of the largest infrastructure investments in the region in decades. The total projected cost of the project is estimated at approximately $380 million, funded through a mix of federal grants, local funding, and airport authority financing. Once completed, the facility will replace commercial airline operations currently based at Mobile Regional Airport, shifting passenger travel closer to downtown and providing easier access for both residents and visitors. Officials have repeatedly emphasized that the new location will offer expanded capacity, modern amenities, and increased opportunities to attract additional airlines and routes. ANONYMOUS BOARD MEMBER: “IT’S NOT THE AIRLINES” While early public messaging suggested airlines were hesitant to transition during peak travel seasons, a verified member of the Mobile Airport Authority board—who spoke exclusively to The Buzz Report on condition of anonymity—painted a very different picture. According to the source, the delays are not being driven by airlines, but instead stem from construction setbacks and internal leadership challenges. “There is a lot of noise about being under budget and airlines not wanting to move during busy months—that’s not entirely true,” the board member said. “The real issues are design and execution.” DESIGN OVERSIGHTS CREATE LAST-MINUTE PROBLEMS Among the most significant revelations: the new terminal was not initially designed to properly accommodate rental car operations. Car rental companies are noticeably at every airport when you exit the airport. This oversight has forced planners to revisit and rework existing infrastructure, including potentially converting portions of the current downtown terminal space to support rental car companies tied to the new airport. Now, how will passengers get to the car rental and downtown terminal side from the main terminal? “They didn’t have proper design space for rental car companies inside the main terminal,” the source explained. “Now they’re having to adjust plans late in the process.” Such changes are not only costly but time-consuming—adding pressure to an already shifting timeline. TRAFFIC CONCERNS AND THE RETURN OF A ROUNDABOUT Another major issue involves traffic flow at the airport’s main entrance along Perimeter Road. Initial plans included the construction of a roundabout to manage incoming and outgoing traffic. However, the feature was reportedly removed during earlier planning stages—only to now be reconsidered as a necessary addition. “They’re trying to get that roundabout back into construction before opening,” the board member said. “That alone could take six to eight months, pushing the opening past the New Year.” If reintroduced, the project could significantly impact both the timeline and budget. TIMELINE UNCERTAINTY CONTINUES Previous estimates from local leadership suggested the airport could be completed by September or early October, with an opening targeted for late October or early November after staff is trained and all equipment in place. However, with ongoing adjustments and unresolved infrastructure concerns, those projections appear increasingly uncertain. “Once updated data is presented to the board and chairman, we should get a clearer timeline,” the source said. “But right now, nothing is locked in.” QUESTIONS ABOUT TRANSPARENCY AND PUBLIC TRUST The shifting narrative has also sparked concerns about whether the public is receiving accurate information—especially given the scale of taxpayer investment. The anonymous board member acknowledged that some public statements may not fully reflect the reality of the situation. “Coming in under budget sounds good and reassures people,” they said. “But that money doesn’t just sit—it has to go somewhere else. The public needs clear, honest information.” LEADERSHIP CHANGES ADD TO UNCERTAINTY Instability within the airport’s leadership structure may also be contributing to delays. When asked about multiple changes in executive leadership, the board member suggested a lack of alignment at the top. “It seems like everyone may not be on the same page, and it’s causing delays—if you understand.” WHAT ABOUT NEW AIRLINES? Despite hopes that the new facility would attract additional carriers, there are currently no confirmed announcements of new airlines or routes. However, interest remains in bringing a major low-cost carrier to Mobile. “The board would like to see another budget airline return,” the source said. “Southwest is a top target—but there are no deals to announce right now.” THE BOTTOM LINE For residents of Mobile and the Gulf Coast, the promise of a modern, convenient international airport remains within reach—but not without complications. As construction continues and decisions are revisited, the success of the project may ultimately depend on clear leadership, transparent communication, and timely execution. The Buzz Report reached out to Mobile Airport Authority Chairman Sandy Simpson for comment but has not received a response as of publication. For now, one thing is certain: the runway to opening day remains under construction.
