Amtrak’s Gulf Coast “Mardi Gras” Line Sees Strong Growth as Officials Eye Expansion to Baton Rouge

NEW ORLEANS, LA (BuzzReport) — Amtrak officials appeared before the New Orleans City Council’s Transportation Committee on Thursday, offering new details on the rapid growth of passenger rail along the Gulf Coast and outlining both progress and challenges facing future expansion.

The meeting centered on the “Mardi Gras Service” line, which connects New Orleans to Mobile—a route that has quickly emerged as one of the most successful regional rail launches in recent years. Since its debut in August 2025, Amtrak reports more than 92,000 passenger trips have been recorded, signaling strong demand for alternatives to highway travel along the I-10 corridor.

Council members were told the route currently takes approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes to 4 hours end-to-end, depending on scheduling and track conditions. The line includes several key stops along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, including Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi, and Pascagoula, before arriving in Mobile. Officials noted that the highest ridership originates in New Orleans and Mobile, with Biloxi also contributing significant passenger volume.

Amtrak representatives emphasized that continued investment is underway to improve reliability and safety along the corridor. That includes upgrades to rail crossings and additional protective measures, following multiple fatal incidents reported along the route since service began. While specific details of those incidents were not discussed at length, officials acknowledged safety remains a top priority as ridership grows.

Beyond current operations, city leaders pressed Amtrak on long-discussed plans to expand passenger rail service between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. While public interest in that route is increasing—fueled by rising traffic congestion and demand for regional transit—Amtrak officials cautioned that significant infrastructure hurdles remain.

Chief among those challenges is the Spillway Bridge, a critical section of track that would require upgrades or replacement to support consistent passenger service. Amtrak noted that resolving these issues will require coordination with freight rail operators, as well as state and federal investment.

Despite those obstacles, representatives pointed to a clear shift in public sentiment, with more residents seeking reliable, cost-effective alternatives to driving. Council members echoed that sentiment, highlighting the potential for expanded rail service to boost tourism, reduce congestion, and strengthen economic ties across South Louisiana and the Gulf Coast.

As discussions continue, officials say the success of the Mardi Gras line may serve as a blueprint for future rail expansion across the region—provided infrastructure and safety concerns are addressed.
