MONROEVILLE, Ala. (BuzzReport) — A Monroeville man died after being taken into custody by local police Monday afternoon, prompting an active investigation by state authorities.

According to the Monroeville Police Department, officers initially received a call on March 30, 2026, regarding a domestic situation involving Ammarin Tunstall, who was also wanted on outstanding warrants with the department.

A few hours later, at approximately 2:30 p.m., a uniformed patrol officer spotted Tunstall walking near the intersection of Crowe Avenue and Marengo Street. When the officer attempted to make contact, Tunstall fled on foot into a nearby wooded area, authorities said.

Additional officers responded to the scene, and Tunstall was located a short time later. He was taken into custody without incident.

Police stated that Tunstall was alert and communicating with officers but refused to walk at times — behavior they described as not uncommon during prior encounters. While being escorted to a patrol vehicle, Tunstall briefly walked on his own before stopping again. Officers said he continued speaking with them as he was placed into the vehicle for transport to the Monroe County Detention Facility.

However, upon arrival at the facility, Tunstall became unresponsive.

Officers immediately began administering medical aid and requested emergency medical services. Tunstall was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Due to the circumstances surrounding the death, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) has been called in to conduct an independent investigation, which is standard procedure in in-custody death cases.

Officials confirmed that the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The Monroeville Police Department stated it is fully cooperating with ALEA and has turned over all relevant evidence, including body camera footage.

Authorities emphasized that any further questions regarding the case will be handled by ALEA as the investigation continues.

In a statement, the department extended condolences to Tunstall’s family and asked the community to keep them in their thoughts during this time.

No additional details have been released.
