Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) — Jury selection is complete and opening statements are set to begin Wednesday morning in the trial of Darius Lucky Jr., the first of five suspects charged in connection with the fatal shooting of 9-year-old Cailee Knight.

Court proceedings officially got underway Tuesday, March 31, with jurors selected to hear the case. Opening statements are scheduled for 9 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1, marking the start of what is expected to be a closely watched and emotionally charged trial.

Lucky faces charges tied to the deadly drive-by shooting that claimed Cailee Knight’s life. According to investigators, the young girl was asleep on her couch when gunfire erupted outside her home. Authorities have said the shooting was not intended for Cailee, but rather targeted her 16-year-old brother, making her death a tragic case of mistaken identity.

Prosecutors allege that Lucky was involved in the coordinated attack, which led to multiple arrests in the days following the incident. In total, five suspects were taken into custody. Four of those individuals, including Lucky, were charged with two counts of capital murder, reflecting the severity of the crime and the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The case has drawn widespread attention due to the age of the victim and the nature of the violence. Community members and officials have repeatedly described the killing as senseless, underscoring ongoing concerns about gun violence and its impact on innocent victims.

As the first defendant to stand trial, Lucky’s case is expected to set the tone for the proceedings against the remaining suspects. Legal experts note that the outcome could influence how prosecutors approach subsequent trials tied to the same incident.

During opening statements, prosecutors are expected to outline the sequence of events leading up to the shooting and present evidence they say links Lucky to the crime. Defense attorneys will have the opportunity to challenge those claims and present their own interpretation of the evidence.

The trial is anticipated to include witness testimony, forensic evidence, and potentially statements from investigators who worked the case.

If convicted, Lucky could face the most severe penalties under state law, including life imprisonment or the death penalty, given the capital murder charges.

The trial continues this week as both sides begin presenting their cases before the jury beginning Wednesday morning.
