Washington, D.C. (BuzzReport) — A controversial nominee put forward by President Donald Trump for a senior State Department role has withdrawn from consideration following intense scrutiny during his Senate confirmation process.

Jeremy Carl, who had been nominated to serve as assistant secretary of state for international organizations, stepped down after facing bipartisan criticism over a history of inflammatory remarks related to race, immigration, and what he previously described as “white identity” in the United States.

Carl’s nomination quickly became embroiled in controversy as lawmakers and advocacy groups highlighted past public statements, writings, and social media posts that critics said promoted racially divisive rhetoric.

Among the most widely criticized remarks was Carl’s past claim that individuals involved in the January 6 United States Capitol attack had been treated more harshly than Black Americans who lived under the era of Jim Crow laws — a comparison that drew sharp condemnation from civil rights organizations and several members of Congress.

Additional criticism centered on comments Carl had made about the leadership of the American Federation of Teachers, including a past statement in which he suggested its president should be executed, remarks that resurfaced during the confirmation debate.

The issue that generated the most concern among senators, however, involved Carl’s repeated references to protecting “white identity,” language critics argue is frequently associated with extremist or white nationalist ideologies.

During his confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Chris Murphy pressed Carl to explain what he meant by the phrase. Carl struggled to provide a clear definition, a moment that quickly became a focal point of the hearing and intensified opposition to the nomination.

With Democrats united against his confirmation and several Republican senators signaling reservations, Carl’s path to approval appeared increasingly unlikely.

Shortly afterward, Carl announced on the social media platform X that he was withdrawing his nomination. In his statement, he thanked Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for their support but expressed frustration that some Republican senators had not moved forward with advancing his nomination.

Civil rights groups had also raised concerns during the confirmation process, pointing to Carl’s past commentary referencing the far-right “Great Replacement” conspiracy theory and remarks about immigration and Jewish history that critics described as troubling.

Carl’s withdrawal marks the latest instance in which a high-profile nominee aligned with Trump has seen their confirmation bid falter amid Senate scrutiny. The episode underscores how past statements and political rhetoric can become central issues during the rigorous vetting process required for senior diplomatic appointments.
