Slidell, LA, December 19, 2005 – The Slidell Police Department sustained extensive water damage to its roof, ceiling, doors, and mechanical systems from Hurricane Katrina. FEMA obligated more than $400,000 for temporary and permanent repairs to the facility.

Slidell, LA (BuzzReport) — A 65-year-old inmate was found unresponsive early this morning inside a cell at the Slidell City Jail, prompting an official in-custody death investigation by local authorities.

The inmate has been identified as Douglas Koch, who had been arrested approximately two days earlier on a second-offense DWI charge. According to preliminary information released by officials, Koch was housed alone at the time of his death and appeared to have suffered a medical emergency while sleeping. Authorities say there are no immediate signs of foul play.

The Slidell Police Department confirmed that its Criminal Investigations Division is conducting a full review, as required in all cases involving a death in custody. Investigators are examining jail protocols, medical history, and surveillance footage to ensure all procedures were properly followed.

“At this time, all indications suggest Mr. Koch died of natural causes,” officials stated, emphasizing that the investigation remains ongoing pending medical confirmation.

An autopsy has been ordered and will be performed by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office, which will officially determine the cause and manner of death.

The incident underscores the heightened scrutiny that accompanies in-custody deaths, particularly involving older detainees or those with potential underlying health conditions. Authorities say additional details will be released once the coroner’s findings are complete.
