Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) — A community celebration in Mobile Terrace was abruptly interrupted by gunfire as a Mardi Gras–style parade moved through the neighborhood, sending dozens of attendees running for safety. The BuzzReport was positioned approximately one block away when the shots rang out. State Rep. Barbara Drummond, who was participating in the parade at the time, described the scene as a shocking and painful turn during what was meant to be a day of unity and cultural celebration. “What should have been a beautiful day of fellowship and culture in Mobile Terrace was abruptly disrupted by gunfire,” Drummond said in a statement. “I was participating in a Mardi Gras–style parade—surrounded by neighbors, families, and children—when gunshots erupted and turned joy into fear.” Drummond said the incident marked the first time she had personally experienced such violence in a community setting. “I have never before experienced such senselessness firsthand,” she said. She emphasized that the shooting highlights deeper issues affecting neighborhoods across the city. “This moment underscores a desperate need for community-centered resources, conflict resolution, and proactive intervention,” Drummond added. “Our neighborhoods deserve spaces where celebration does not turn into trauma, and where safety is not an afterthought but a shared responsibility. Enough is enough.” Authorities confirmed that no one was injured in the shooting. However, at least three vehicles were struck by gunfire as panic spread through the crowd and parade-goers fled the area. The Mobile Police Department reported that no suspects have been identified at this time. The incident remains under active investigation, and officers are asking anyone with information to contact police immediately. Despite the disruption, community leaders say the incident has renewed calls for cooperation between residents, law enforcement, and elected officials to prevent future violence in neighborhood events meant to bring people together. The BuzzReport remains committed to providing timely, accurate reporting on stories that matter most to the community.
