Monroeville, Ala. (BuzzReport) —A shooting investigation in Monroeville escalated into a multi-county vehicle pursuit Tuesday morning, ending with an arrest in Greenville after a crash and foot chase. Around 8 a.m. Tuesday, investigators with the Monroeville Police Department were actively investigating a shooting that occurred Saturday morning at Rockwood Apartments. While attempting to locate a person of interest connected to that incident, officers observed the individual flee the area in a vehicle. An unmarked police unit initiated the pursuit on East Claiborne Street before the chase was transferred to marked patrol units just north of Monroeville on Highway 21 North. The pursuit continued north through Beatrice, where a Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy was involved in a traffic accident with a tractor-trailer transporting logs. At that point, the unmarked unit discontinued the pursuit to render aid at the crash scene, while two marked Monroeville Police Department units continued north. As the pursuit entered Butler County, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office and Greenville Police Department assumed the lead. Authorities said the fleeing vehicle continued into Greenville, where it crashed into a parked vehicle. The driver then exited and attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended a short distance away. The driver was identified as Destin Casey. He was transported to the Butler County Jail before being returned to the Monroeville Police Department along with the vehicle involved. Investigators reported locating two firearms inside the vehicle. Casey was later booked into the Monroe County Detention Facility on charges of felony attempting to elude and being a certain person forbidden to possess firearms. Officials asked the public to keep the injured Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy and the tractor-trailer driver in their thoughts as they recover from the accident. Law enforcement also expressed appreciation to the multiple agencies that assisted during the pursuit and responded to the crash, as well as to the citizens who stopped to help at the accident scene.
