Adams County, Mississippi (BuzzReport) — A tragic crash claimed the life of a driver Monday afternoon after a vehicle struck the front of a church in Adams County, authorities confirmed. According to Travis Patten, deputies with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office responded to Smithland Baptist Churchalong Highway 61 North at approximately 5:00 p.m. on February 16, 2026. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a blue Mercury that had crashed into the front of the church building. Sheriff Patten said the vehicle left the roadway, traveled through the church gate, went up an embankment, and collided with the structure. Preliminary information indicates the unidentified driver suffered an apparent medical emergency prior to the crash. Adams County Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and provided advanced life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. No other injuries were reported, and no one inside the church was harmed at the time of the crash. Sheriff Patten said the Mississippi Highway Patrol has assumed primary responsibility for the investigation into the crash. Further details, including the driver’s identity and cause of the medical emergency, have not yet been released. The investigation remains ongoing.
