MOBILE, Ala. (BuzzReport) — A 65-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a deadly October crash near the Interstate 10 exit ramp and Highway 90 South that claimed the life of a man who had stopped to help another driver following a vehicle accident.

Victor Carnes was arrested Friday, October 23, 2026, and booked into Metro Jail in connection with the traffic fatality and accident that occurred nearly two weeks earlier, on October 10, according to the Mobile Police Department.

The fatal collision took the life of Jayan Patel, 45, who was struck by a passing vehicle while outside his own vehicle attempting to assist a driver whose car had crashed.

Crash Turns Deadly After Vehicle Overturns

The chain of events began shortly before midnight Saturday, October 10. At approximately 11:30 p.m., officers responded to a serious multi-vehicle collision near the I-10 exit ramp and Highway 90 South.

When officers arrived, they encountered a chaotic crash scene involving multiple vehicles, including one that had overturned and landed on its roof. A male victim was found in the roadway suffering from life-threatening injuries.

The injured man was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. Authorities subsequently identified him as Jayan Patel, 45.

Investigators determined that the initial crash began when a driver lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle left the roadway, continued onto Highway 90 South and struck a guardrail before overturning.

Although the driver of the overturned vehicle appeared to have only minor injuries, the wreck prompted other motorists to stop and offer assistance.

Good Samaritan Struck While Helping

According to investigators, two other vehicles stopped at the scene to help the driver involved in the initial crash. During the incident, those vehicles were struck by another vehicle traveling through the area.

Patel had exited his vehicle and was outside attempting to assist the driver when he was struck by the passing vehicle.

The impact left Patel with life-threatening injuries. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, he did not survive.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Patel reportedly left the scene before authorities could identify and apprehend him. Investigators continued working to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision and locate the driver.

Arrest Made Nearly Two Weeks After Fatal Crash

The investigation continued following Patel’s death, culminating in Carnes’ arrest on Friday, October 23.

Carnes, 65, was booked into Metro Jail in connection with the fatal traffic accident. Authorities have not provided additional details about the specific charges, whether Carnes was identified as the driver who struck Patel, or what evidence led investigators to make the arrest.

Investigation Continues

While Patel was attempting to assist another person in distress, he became the victim of a second collision that ultimately cost him his life.

The Mobile Police Department has not released further information about the investigation or announced whether additional charges may be filed.
