Bessemer, AL (BuzzReport) — City leaders in Bessemer have announced a significant update to the proposed Project Marvel Data Center, signaling a shift in planning aimed at addressing concerns raised by residents, community stakeholders, and partner agencies.

In response to feedback regarding the project’s proximity to residential neighborhoods and its relationship to the planned Northern Beltline, the Mayor and City Council revealed a revised development framework designed to better balance economic growth with community compatibility.

After reviewing public input, the City identified additional land adjacent to the currently zoned parcel that will allow for a redesigned site layout. An affiliate of the data center developer has agreed to acquire this neighboring property, enabling the creation of substantially larger buffer zones between the proposed data center campus and nearby homes.

City officials say the expanded buffers will help mitigate concerns about land use compatibility while also improving coordination between the data center’s footprint and the future Northern Beltline corridor. The revised approach, leaders say, reflects Bessemer’s commitment to thoughtful, long-term planning.

“The City of Bessemer remains committed to balancing responsible development with thoughtful planning that supports long-term economic growth and quality of life for our residents,” officials said in a statement.

Mayor Kenneth E. Gulley emphasized the importance of community engagement in shaping the project’s direction.

“We are grateful for the thoughtful input provided by our residents, neighbors, and stakeholders,” Gulley said. “This collaborative process reflects our commitment to responsible development that prioritizes community well-being while positioning Bessemer for future economic opportunity.”

City staff are now working closely with the developer to finalize updates to the proposed campus design. Revised plans are expected to be presented at upcoming Planning and Zoning Commission meetings in the coming months. Those meetings will be open to the public and will include opportunities for residents to provide additional comment.

In addition, the Bessemer City Council plans to host a public meeting to share more details about the project and gather further feedback from the community. City leaders are encouraging all interested residents to attend and participate.

Details regarding meeting dates and times will be announced as they become available.
