Montgomery, AL (BuzzReport) — Former Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries Ron Sparks, a Democrat, officially qualified Monday to seek a return to the office he held for two consecutive terms from 2003 to 2011, launching a comeback campaign rooted in experience, consumer protection, and what he calls practical, results-driven leadership.

Sparks said his campaign is grounded in a proven record at the Department of Agriculture, emphasizing his past work supporting farmers, strengthening food safety, and modernizing the agency’s infrastructure.

“I stand on my record,” Sparks said. “We fought for Alabama farmers, improved food safety, and built three new animal diagnostic laboratories across the state to better protect our agricultural economy.”

A central plank of Sparks’ platform is restoring law enforcement authority within the Department of Agriculture. He said returning the agency’s Law Enforcement Division would help combat agricultural theft, protect farmers, and crack down on consumer fraud.

“We need trained law enforcement officers inside the department,” Sparks said. “That means helping farmers when equipment or livestock is stolen and protecting consumers from fraud across Alabama.”

Sparks also pointed to rising costs facing Alabama families, arguing the department should play a stronger role in consumer protection. He highlighted the importance of enforcing accuracy in fuel sales, weights and measures, and other regulated goods that directly affect household budgets.

During his previous tenure, Sparks won statewide support, carrying 62 of Alabama’s 67 counties in his last race for the office — the same election year Republican Gov. Bob Riley was elected.

He closed his announcement with a call for bipartisan cooperation, stressing that the Department of Agriculture should remain focused on service rather than politics.

“There’s no place for politics in the Department of Agriculture,” Sparks said. “I’m willing to work with all elected officials to make Alabama the best it can be.”
