Washington, D.C. (BuzzReport) — As 2025 draws to a close and the nation steps into a new year, many Alabamians are confronting the consequences of what critics describe as a Republican governing agenda in Washington that prioritizes political loyalty and wealth over the needs of working families.

Alabama’s Republican senators, Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville, have spent the past year defending a deeply controversial president and advancing policies that overwhelmingly benefit the nation’s richest Americans, while leaving middle- and low-income households behind. Advocacy groups and policy analysts argue that this approach has produced real economic pain across Alabama, particularly in healthcare affordability.

Unless Congress acts, millions of Americans — including thousands in Alabama — are set to experience sharp increases in healthcare premiums as enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies expire. Senator Britt and Senator Tuberville declined to support legislation that would have extended those subsidies, a move critics say places ideology above the well-being of working families, seniors, and rural residents who rely on affordable coverage.

Senator Britt has repeatedly framed herself as a champion for Alabama families, but voting records tell a different story, according to watchdog organizations. On issue after issue — from healthcare access to tax reform — her positions have aligned with corporate interests and the ultra-wealthy, not the average Alabamian struggling to make ends meet.

Affordability remains the defining issue across the state. Rising rents, higher gas and grocery prices, stagnant wages, and the closure of rural health clinics have left many communities stretched thin. For families living paycheck to paycheck, these pressures are not abstract political talking points — they are daily realities.

Yes, Alabama’s senators have been active in Washington. But critics argue their work has served donors, party leadership, and political power rather than the people who elected them.

As the 2026 midterm elections approach, control of Congress is increasingly in question. Democrats see an opportunity to reclaim the House as voters grow frustrated with what they view as Republican inaction on kitchen-table issues.

The question now facing Republicans is a simple one: will they change course and address the economic struggles of everyday Americans — or continue down a path that risks further political backlash?

For many Alabamians, the answer cannot come soon enough.
