Washington D.C. (BuzzReport) – President Donald Trump has deployed National Guard troops to Washington D.C., escalating his focus on crime in major American cities and vowing further federal intervention, even as local leaders fiercely push back, citing statistics that contradict the president’s claims of rampant lawlessness.

During a Monday press conference, President Trump announced the D.C. National Guard deployment, asserting that the federal government had taken over the city’s police department to combat what he described as “crime, bloodshed, bedlam, and squalor.” He painted a grim picture of several major U.S. cities, including Washington D.C., Baltimore, Oakland, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York, singling out Baltimore and Oakland as being “so far gone” they were beyond recovery.

However, these assertions clash sharply with available crime data. In Washington D.C., major crime indicators have reportedly dropped by approximately 20 percent. Critics argue that President Trump is bypassing these figures in favor of a narrative designed to impose fear and assert federal authority. The president’s intensified focus on D.C. follows an alleged assault on a former Department of Government Efficiency staffer earlier this month, prompting a Truth Social post from Trump threatening to “federalize” the city if local leaders did not “get their act together.”

The president’s broad remarks have once again cast Baltimore into the national spotlight, prompting a swift and forceful rebuttal from Mayor Brandon Scott.

“Baltimore is the safest it’s been in over 50 years,” Mayor Scott declared on social media Monday. He accused Trump of using Baltimore as a political distraction from the nation’s “roller coaster” economy, which Scott attributed to the president’s own policies. Scott highlighted significant crime reductions in the city, noting that homicides are down 28% in 2025, representing the lowest numbers on record for this period. Baltimore police data further supports this, showing a 24.3% drop in homicides and a 19.5% drop in nonfatal shootings compared to the same period in 2024, with juvenile killings at their lowest in over a decade.

Addressing a recent National Night Out event, Mayor Scott acknowledged that while Baltimore has made substantial progress, the 84 homicides recorded so far this year remain “one too many.” Still, he reiterated this is the lowest count at this point in any year on record, crediting the city’s expanded Group Violence Reduction Strategy for much of the improvement. While some neighborhoods, such as Federal Hill, have reported recent crime increases, community leaders like Mark Cannon of We Are Us emphasize the ongoing need for more resources and accountability.

This is not President Trump’s first time targeting Baltimore. In March, he drew criticism for claiming 40% of the city’s high school students were incapable of “basic mathematics,” a statement local outlets clarified was a misinterpretation of Maryland’s Algebra I exam results. Mayor Scott had previously countered these remarks, pointing out that Baltimore City’s math scores had improved five times faster than the state average and calling on the administration to assist rather than “treat the Department of Education like the WWE Royal Rumble.”

Maryland Governor Wes Moore also weighed in on the National Guard deployment to D.C., calling it “deeply dangerous” and “lacking seriousness.” Governor Moore accused the president of weaponizing military personnel for political gain and ignoring genuine solutions to public safety. He pointed to Maryland’s own success in combating violent crime, stating that the state has achieved one of the largest declines in the country over the past two and a half years, with homicides down more than 20% since his inauguration.
